WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE CHORAL DEPARTMENT
THIS YEAR?
Val-O-Grams
Our annual fundraiser, our Singing Val-O-Grams, was very successful this year. We raised around $1,300 to use toward our participation in large group choral festival and the CBC festival. Ensembles from every choir delivered Val-o-Grams around the school and the Tri Cities. The following link to our local news shows a 3-segment feature on us they showed Valentine's Day. Go to KEPRTV.com and search for Student reaction to RHS' Val-O-Grams to view it.
RHS Choir students brave the cold to provide festive holiday music for the Uptown Shopping Center's tree lighting ceremony. Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand as well.
Choral department wows them at the Veteran's Day Assembly
On November 8, the RHS choral groups combined with the RHS Instrumental department to perform for the Richland High School Veteran's Day assembly. Jazz Reaction and Chamber Choir combined to sing "The Star Spangled Banner." Then, all the choirs and the orchestra performed "Oh, America" which featured Kenedy Carey as the soloist. "I have received many compliments on the music, especially 'Oh, America.' A couple of staff members were moved to tears." said RHS Choral Director, Greg Fryhling. After the guest speaker, the Treble Choir sang, "Homeland" and sang like a group far more mature than their relatively young ages would indicate. The Wind Ensemble ended with "Stars and Stripes Forever." Overall, it was an amazing performance by all! And Thank you to all of you veterans who served our country.
Chamber Choir Performs at the Federal Courthouse for Naturalization Ceremony
On September 5th, the Chamber Choir performed the National Anthem and "America the Beautiful" for thirty brand new U.S. citizens. Judge Edward Shay had invited the choir to participate and wrote in regards to the performance, "'America the Beautiful' touched the emotions of many present, including myself."
There was a special guest appearance and speech given by Congressman, Doc Hastings. The students had a great lesson in civics, getting to see what a jury deliberation rooms looks like as well as being reminded of how special it is to be a United States citizen.
RHS Choir members perform with Foreigner at the Benton Franklin Fair
Members of the RHS Choral Department had the incredible opportunity to perform onstage with the rock band, Foreigner on August 21, 2013 as part of their North American tour. At the end of the previous school year, a handfull of choir students got together to make an audition video of the song, "I Want to Know What Love Is." RHS was chosen to get to sing backup on that song during the Foreigner concert. In addition, Foreigner donated $500.00 to the RHS Choral Program. In this photo, Foreigner's bass player, Jeff Pilson is being interviewed live on a local tv newscast. We got to be in the background and even sing a bit of our song on the news. Media coverage of this included two tv stations as well as a newspaper article!
